The Rules of Golf
Most sports have rules that become standardised overtime. This ensures proper play no matter the venue. Typically a governing body oversees the sports and is held in high esteem as an authority on the sport. This holds true for the popular game of golf. Currently, the rules of the game of golf are overseen by a joint effort between the Royal and Ancient Golf Clubs of St. Andrews and the Golf Association. These two bodies seek to maintain the element of fairness for all in the game of golf. They are the group that writes and interprets the rules of golf.
Basic rules have been established for the game of golf. Of course, rules were written on how to play. For example, no player is to in any way influence the ball so that it travels in the direction they choose. When the ball is played, it must stay where it lies. Other rules exist as to the clubs and balls used in the game of golf. Specific information is outlined regarding the responsibilities of each player.
If these rules are not followed, a penalty may be assessed according to established rules. For example, if a player takes an extra swing at the ball, it will count against his score in determining his par score for that hole. Some disregard for the rules can even cause a player to become disqualified from the game.
Not only have rules for play been established but other standards for players. The regulations are very clear as to which players qualify for amateur status. Those players who at any time were monetarily compensated for either playing the game of golf of instructing others in the game are not eligible for amateur status. This compensation is for the act of playing itself, not expenses that may have been incurred.
A set of etiquette for golfers has also been established. Following these guidelines ensures that everyone playing the game will have the best possible time. However, there are not ways to enforce this code of etiquette. Players simply are expected to adhere to these tips as they would want others to act in a similar manner towards them.
