Golf tournaments and championships

Golf is not only a leisure sport enjoyed by many but it has also become a popular spectator sport for people all over the world to enjoy. Professional golfers join various golf tours and compete against one another. These golf tournaments are typically overseen by a specific organization that plan the events included in the tournament.

Perhaps the most popular men’s golf tournament in the world is the PGA Tour. For a golfer to participate in this tournament is a high honour and sometimes the ultimate dream of the golfing professional. Winners of the PGA tour collect substantial monetary winnings as well as lucrative endorsements that soon follow. A second popular golf tour is that of the PGA European Tour. It is possible for a golfer to be included in both tournaments. Other tours do exist in other parts of the world. These would include the PGA Tour of Australasia, Japan Golf Tour, South Africa’s Sunshine Tour and the Asian Tour. In the western hemisphere, two other golf tournaments exist. These are known as the Tour de la Americas, which concentrates itself in Latin America and the Canadian Tour.

In men’s golf, there are several championships that professional golfers vie for when going on the tour. This elite group includes four of golf’s majors. These championships include the PGA Championship, U.S. Open and the Master’s. A fourth championship is known by two names depending upon your geographic location. The Open Championship is known to most of the world but those in North America who refer to this championship as the British Open.

Women also have their own golf tournaments as well. However, these championships lack the consensus in their operation in comparison to the championships in men’s golf. Hands down the LPGA Tour is the most prestigious women’s golf tour. A second tournament that has been a stiff competitor has been the Ladies European Tour. A third women’s golf tournament is played in Japan. This tournament is called the LPGA Tour of Japan. While it is popular within the country of Japan, its influence fails to expand beyond the boundaries of the island nation.
